• 81st Annual Conference Wrap-up
    Posted On: Jul 06, 2015

    Good afternoon Brothers and Sisters,

If you did not attend the 81st Annual Conference of the FOP of Ohio, you missed an extremely well run conference hosted by 9th District Trustee Greg Toyeas and Lodge 69.   A great time was had by all.

Below, I will give you an overview of the 3 days of the conference:

    AWARDS

Lodge of the Year was given out to Lodge 94 in Wayne County for the outstanding work that they do in the community and the service they provide their members.  Also highlighted was their relationship with their FOPA.

Member of the Year was awarded but not given out due to the winner having a family emergency and the desire to present the award in front of his/her family.   It will be announced in Pittsburgh.

FOPA Member of the Year was given to Denise Young, the FOP Office Administrator who has become extremely active in her local and the state FOPA.   Her dedication and knowledge were mentioned as why she received this award.   (The other FOPA and Auxiliary awards will be announced by them but we wanted to let everyone know about this because of all she does for us)

Denise was also recognized by the FOP of Ohio for her 30 years of service to our Order...we are honored that she has chosen to be a part of our family and has done her job so well to the benefit of the members.

Steve Young Presidential Award was awarded to Mike Taylor of Lodge 9.   Mike has served the State and National FOP as an elected Board member but the real reason was the things no one ever sees, such as being the biggest supporter to the FOP Foundation and being a trusted advisor to the entire Board.

Ohio FOP's Legislator of the Year was given to State Senator Tom Patton.   Senator Patton is part of the FOP family, his father and brothers were Cleveland officers and his son was killed in the line of duty while working for Cleveland Hts.   His constant support for our agenda, including his sponsorship of our PTSD bill makes him our best friend in the Ohio legislature.

Chet DeLong was honored by numerous speakers at the conference for his 20 years of service as Ohio's National Trustee.  Chet is not seeking re-election and his steadiness, integrity and leadership will be hard to replace on the National FOP Board.

    NATIONAL BOARD IN ATTENDANCE

President Chuck Canterbury, Treasurer Tom Penoza, Second Vice President Frank Gale, Sgt. at Arms Roger Mayberry all were in attendance and addressed the delegates.    Pennsylvania State FOP President Les Neri and Indiana FOP Vice President Pete Byrne also came to Cincinnati to spend time with our members.

    NATIONAL FOP ELECTIONS

The delegates unanimously endorsed Chuck Canterbury, Tom Penoza and Roger Mayberry for re-election and affirmed their support of my bid to win election as National FOP Vice President.   They also unanimously endorsed Les Neri for the office of Second Vice President.

Shaun Laird of Lodge 9 and Kathy Harrell of Lodge 69 announced that they were seeking election as Ohio's National Trustee.    That election will take place on Monday of the National Conference.

    INVITED SPEAKERS

Senate President Keith Faber and Congressman Brad Wenstrup addressed the delegates and expressed their support of law enforcement officers.

Michael Yon of the National FOP Legal Defense Plan spoke about how important it is for our members to be protected in today's climate especially.   If your union does not offer criminal coverage or you are outside of the bargaining unit, $64 per year is the best insurance you can own.   They also offer retirees coverage for HR 218 purposes and offer moonlighting insurance among other options to best cover the members.    This all can be found at www.foplegal.comwww.foplegal.com

Dave Dunham spoke about the National Police Credit Union and the products they can offer our members, like car loans and personal loans, etc...

Liberty Mutual is a long time partner who offers great rates and service to our members.

    NEW TRUSTEE AND NEW CHAIRPERSONS

Randy Beane of Dayton 44 is the new 5th District Trustee.   We welcome Randy to the Board!  Tracey Susana is the new Special Olympics Committee Chair.   Bruce Szilagyi is the new OLC Chair.    Lisa Beam is the new Resolutions Committee Chair.   Congrats to all!
